Descripion of just a FEW mods that Ivan from Australia has carefully matched up in order to get 360bhp AT THE WHEELS out of his GTI-R... 2 x 6inch diameter mufflers to get under 90dB Pic of 3 inch resonator. After cat exhaust is mild steel, before cat its stainless steel. Catalytic converter replacement (good boy!) - centre exhaust is 3inch diameter, cat is a high flow 3 inch cat. Exhaust under engine. Notice ext wastegate pipe. Notice Phantomgrip device inside diff centre (front diff). This acts like a LSD diff now (Not on here, the strong, 100% OZ-developed, GTI-R PAR gearset - for more, see here ... http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/gti-r) Ivan's latest results from the Eastern Creek (OZ) drags 9-4-03 ... 1st run: 12.1@80.78mph (130kph) 60ft of 1.849 2nd run: 11.4@122.98mph (197.93kph) 60ft of 1.835 3rd run: 12.2@12.72mph (197.49kph) 60ft of 2.301 Got to the Creek nice and early, put on the dodgy plates and payed my rego fees. Passed scrutineering and parked in the waiting lanes. Getting closer to the starting time butterflies started to creep in. Adrenalin took over when i was infront of the pre stage (burnout) area. I was lined up against a new bug eyed WRX. The guy in the pre stage area stopped the WRX with his back wheels in the liquid, he stopped me with my front wheels in the liquid. He then gestured to 'light em up'. I realised he didn't know what car mine was at that point, what a stooge. We both rolled up to the start line. He got his two white lights on before me and when my white lights were lit (meaning my front wheels were in position) i looked down at the tacho to bring up 6500rpm and by the time i looked up to watch the christmas tree lights the green light was already on. Bugger. WRX boy already started to go (his reaction time was 0.476 which is very good). I pop the clutch (my reaction time was 1.095), slingshot off the line, bang it into 2nd, WRX boy already left behind (his 60ft time was 2.555, mine was 1.849). At the point of grabbing 4th gear i hit the brakes hard (way before the finish line) to cross the line in 12.11 at 80.78mph (130.00kph). WRX got a 14.87 at 96mph (154.61kph). Got my time slip and went back in line. AVCR registered a peak boost spike of 2.02kg/cm2 (call it 2.02bar for simplicity) and max revs was 8097rpm. Next run was with a late 90's WRX wagon. This time the dude in charge of the burnout pad put my back wheels in the liquid. The WRX just strolled to the starting line. It's at this point i noticed how quiet everything was... i was 'in the zone', hehe. I revved it hard and popped the clutch, wheels spinning, revs modulating at around 8000rpm and it launched. Needed to select reverse as i went past the timing start markers. WRX boy had already lined up and was waiting for me. I slowly nudged forward to get the first white ligght on, then the 2nd came on as i nudged a little more forward. Revved the engine up and breifly glanced at the tacho....just above 6000rpm, xmas lights started to light so no time to set optimum revs. Launched with a reaction time of 0.939 (still not good) and bogged it off the line, hrmm not enough revs, but kept it pegged. No time to look at tacho in first as the stock tacho needle is too slow as the engine revs up so bloody quick, change into 2nd on instinct. My brain was telling my left foot that clutch is not required when shifting from 1st to 2nd, just backed off accelerator, grabbed shifter and yanked into 2nd and without waiting for confirmation mashed accelerator again (within a split second of releasing accelerator pedal) to get pretty much a seamless gear shift. I got a 60ft time of 1.835 and kept it pegged in 2nd and changed into 3rd (using the clutch) at 8000rpm. In 3rd i got the wind buffeting noise as the door rubber seals were letting air in. At 8000rpm i grabbed 4th (with clutch) and held on. Glanced at the speedo and the needle was off the clock. Looked in mirror and WRX boy was way back in the distance. Went to pick up time slip and the lady who gives the slips out said "you have to see that bloke over there, you need a licence, you are in the 11 second bracket". "What was my time" i asked, "see the bloke as he has your time". I drive up to him, he comes over, says "ok, turn your engine off", "nope" i say "its a turbo engine and needs to cool down". "Ok then, well my friend, you pulled a 11.47 and need a special drag racing licence which you can get from this lady". I ask the bloke if i need any mods and he said that i don't "but don't get into the tens as there are different rules and then you need to do other mods". So i follow the lady into the office and she tells me to fill in this form for the licence, i tell her this is wasting time as i want to run again. So i fill it in, pay my $95, get a ANDRA pack with my time slip in it and she also tells me not to get into the tens. Bugger that i think to myself, if it do get into the tens i will go home and not bother with the $200 licence. My time was 11.47 at 122.98mph (197.93kph). Didn't get the AVCR max readings as i didn't have the time slip and was too excited! Third run was against a MX-5. I did a burnout in the pre stage area, rev and dump (people say it looked awesome :-). My reaction time was pissy at 0.908 and I totally bogged off the line with a 60ft time of 2.30 ( i think i popped the clutch and floored it too late). I revved up and slammed into 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Was not happy with that run. Got my time slip and results were 12.25 at 122.72mph (197.49kph). MX-5 man got reaction time 1.195, 60ft of 2.443 and ET of 14.43 at 96.94mph (156.01kph). AVCR peak settings were 1.99kg/cm2 and max revs were 8169rpm. Went to line up again for my 4th run but the track was then covered in oil from a spillage which took up a fair amount of time to clean up (about an hour i think) and then another car shat it's looad and they cleaned that up quickly. But as soon as it hit 10pm that was it, no more runs for the night (noise curfew). I was a little dissapointed as i was about the next 10th car to have another run. Oh well, 11.4 @ 123mph is good and i enjoyed myself. Paul, next time listen to the info that was mentioned to you about your oil filter question. Thats the 2nd time the same thing has happened to you (blown your oil filter off), don't make the same mistake a 3rd time. The whole night it didn't rain at all. I haven't raised the bar or taken it home, but that comment made me laugh when i read it. I had to do some work in between the writing of this email. Commentator called my car a Daihatsu FFS. They should get some new younger talent that knows what the cars are instead of only knowing dinosaur cars. Good to see the other GTi-R's run as well and have some fun. Did my runs as i would drive the car on the street, full interior with spare wheel, 33psi in front wheels and 31 in rear, full exhaust still bolted on with functional cat, no screamer pipe. Optimax fuel used with no additives. Watched the footage last night when i got home, wasn't the best (wrong location of camera man) and low light didn't help. It's on a old analogue video camera also. I think some others have digi pics and digi video footage. My best 60ft time when i did a 12.3 back in late 2000 was 1.7. Ivan
